Nerys Valinorian lives on a world devastated by a lengthy hostile occupation. In the years just after the invading armies withdraw, Nerys turns her attention from retribution to rebuilding. The discovery of a strange object buried beneath the wreckage of a once-primeval forest piques the interest of Kiril Athelas, an off-world scholar whose life-long dream has been to visit Kresh.

Invited to study the object by Kresh's spiritual and community leader, Kiril arrives overflowing with questions and energy. Assigned as Kiril's escort, Nerys finds herself journeying across her nearly barren world chasing after ghosts from the past.
