Up Home: Stedman 1903-1909

Clemson Page

When David Gwynn is eight years old, he witnesses a group of miners bring his father's body home and dump it unceremoniously on the floor of the shanty he and his mother call home. Though the "official" inquiry into the accident fails to place the blame for the explosion, tunnel collapse and subsequent flooding on the company bosses, David knows the truth.

David's journey takes him from a coal sorter on the breaker to working deep within the mine itself, leading him ever closer to a final violent confrontation--one which might slake his desire to avenge his father's murder and possibly offer a chance of his own redemption as well.

"Up Home, Book One: Stedman 1903-1909" is the first in a collection of novels set in Northern Pennsylvania's anthracite mining country where men still pursue the dirty and dangerous occupation of blasting, hewing and extracting coal from the tunnels and galleries hundreds of feet underground, allowing themselves little thought to the perils which threaten even the most careful miner.

"Clem Page is a born storyteller. He has written this stunning historical novel with great skill, wisdom, insight and compassion. A compelling read."

--Mickey Getty, author of The Junk Lottery
