Big Witch on Campus

Mary Stuart Jacoby

Bonassette Laiteretat appears to be a 19-year-old prodigy with a new doctorate from the Sorbonne in Paris and a teaching appointment to an ivy covered Catholic college in Quebec. Simultaneously naive and worldly, Bonita's peculiar "Old World" habits and arcane knowledge of the occult suggest that there is more to her than meets the eye. It is an opinion shared by ghost of the matron who haunts Bonita's cottage.

Bonita's exceptional intellect and preternatural beauty draw the unwanted attention of the faculty, clergy and student body alike. She is taken under the wing of Cathedra, chairwoman of the Women's Studies Department, campus power broker and closet dark sorceress. Cathedra resents Bonita's popularity with the coeds who think of her as one of their own. Bonita has a profound effect on the destinies of the young women she befriends. The calculating Cathedra manipulates Bonita into an exhibition of her polymath abilities by taking on the all-male campus chess team en masse in an exhibit tournament. A war of wits ensues over who will be the Big Witch on Campus that culminates with Bonita applying her uncanny memory and mathematical ability on the gaming floor of a Mohawk casino.
